My first evening walk in Havlíčkovy sady
I explored Grébovka for the first time. The vineyard in the middle of the city stood out most; next time I would leave more time for the whole park.
My first evening walk in Havlíčkovy sady
On the evening of 5 October 2026, I visited Havlíčkovy sady, commonly known as Grébovka, for the first time. This historic park is in Vinohrady, above the northern bank of the Botič stream. I allowed just over an hour for my first visit. The sky was clear and it was around 20 °C, so walking through the park was pleasant even in the early evening.
Grébovka covers 11 hectares, including 1.5 hectares of vineyards. The combination of a large city park and a vineyard was what interested me most. The grounds offer paths, lawns, views of Prague, a vineyard with the Viniční altán pavilion, the artificial Grotta cave, a pond, playgrounds, a café and a wine cellar. There is also a pétanque court and exercise equipment.
The park was developed between 1871 and 1888 as the private residence of the family of construction entrepreneur Moritz Gröbe. The municipality bought it in 1905 and opened it to the public the following year under the name Havlíčkovy sady. The grounds also include the Neo-Renaissance Gröbe Villa. It is not normally open to the public, but concerts and exhibitions are occasionally held there.
What I liked most on my first visit was that a walk need not follow only straight paths between lawns. The park has several different sections, and next time I would allow more time to explore all of them. Just over an hour was enough for a first introduction, but not enough to feel that I already knew the whole place.
According to the official information, the park is open every day from 6 am to midnight from April to October. From November to March it closes at 10 pm. Dogs are allowed on a lead; the off-lead area is on the neighbouring Perucká stráň slope. That is useful to know before heading here with a dog.
I would recommend Grébovka to anyone looking for a longer walk, a view of the city and a park with more than just paths and benches. After my first visit, I give Havlíčkovy sady 4 out of 5. I would come back, and next time I would happily set aside a whole afternoon to explore.
